Telefónica I+D is the innovation company of the Telefónica Group. Owned 100% by Telefónica, this subsidiary was formed out from the Telefónica CIE (Centro de Investigación y Estudios) department in 1988, with the aim of strengthening the Group's competitiveness through technological innovation.

Telefónica I+D mission within Telefónica Group is to contribute to improve Telefónica Group competitiveness through technological innovation. In order to achieve this objective, Telefónica I+D runs a large set of projects with its customers -Telefónica business units- providing a highly valuable knowledge on the state-of-the-art and technical challenges as demanded by their evolving business models.

Telefónica I+D is the most important private R+D company in Spain, in terms of both activities and resources, and in terms of number of staff, and it is one of the most important companies on the continent as regards participation in European Research projects.
